Introduction to Art (Course)
This course, Introduction to Art for grades 9 through 12, is designed to introduce students to the principles and elements of art and design. Students will explore the principles and elements of art in both two and three-‐dimensional way. The purpose of the course is for students to appreciate and understand the fundamentals of art and the value of art in our society. I hope students will look at art and develop a style of their own that is unique to their own aesthetic development in the visual arts.

Unit Outline for course
Unit 1: "How can our identity be revealed and/or hidden?"
Students will explore the idea of identity and how they may incorporate art to express themselves. This unit will allow students to analyze how they can identify themselves with art and how art can be identified within them.

Unit 2: "Is this art?"
Students will evaluate perspective and look at how perspective changes by the way we think. This unit will allow student to really observe and visualize their own thinking and perspective.

Unit 3: "How is art a relationship?"
Students will look at art as a relationship. This unit allows students to reflect how art can relate to other subjects. They will analyze, communicate and visualize their own understanding based on certain subject content.

Unit 4: "Can art represent time?"
Students will explore the idea of art that is represented through time. Art isn’t just a still image. Those still images can capture a movement and a moment in history. This unit guides students through an understanding of our perspective in time and its relationship as a study and a record of time.

Unit 5: "Is art in our community?"
Art is seen in many places, especially in our community. Students will explore their own community and identify where and how art is being used in their own daily life/community. This unit allows students to discuss how they can utilize their art knowledge in society.

Overview:
Students will read and analyze a poem. They will explore the idea of articulating and communicating oral/written explanation visually. Students will also reflect and interpret the idea of art and its relationship with other subject matters, which will help them to further understand the impact of art.
